Gather Packing Supplies
Gather plenty of moving supplies in advance to avoid dropping what you're doing midway through the move. You'll need boxes, large and small, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, markers and stickers. Boxes should be clean and sturdy. You can pick up packing supplies from a moving company or packing supply company. Clothes, blankets, sheets and towels might also be used to provide cushion between breakables.
Pack Carefully
Pack items sensibly. Records may look nice and tidy lying flat, but can break when knocking against one another. That goes for your plates too. Customized crates are optimal. If you use a generic box, pack plates vertically, with plenty of padding in between. Fragile items deserve extra care. Make sure you use lots of padding.
Don't over pack your boxes. Overstuffed boxes are tough to carry and make it easier to break things. Heavier items should be packed in smaller boxes, while lighter items can go in the larger boxes.
Tape is a great tool for securing things inside your boxes. But don't go crazy. Avoid using it on painted or finished surfaces. Wood finish and picture frames can be damaged from tape.
Pack One Step at a Time
Packing from one room to the nest is the best method. One manageable amount of space at a time can ensure that you won't overlook things. You'll need to label each box in detail to save grief when unloading and unpacking your things. You may want to try a color-coding technique with stickers for simple organization. While you pack, keep in mind what you will be doing with your new living space when you unpack. If your home comes with a new office, you can create some boxes designated for the new room
Tips for Packing Valuables
Take your valuables with you. Keep items such as legal, financial and other important documents in a secured container to protect from sun or water damage. Take extra care when packing irreplacables such as jewelry and family pictures. Wrap small items separately, with extra cushion, and pack neatly. You should also carry all of your moving documents, like the lease agreement to your new apartment.
Designate a separate box for your essentials when you arrive at your new home. Pack items such as toiletries, bedding and your favorite pair of jeans. Load this box in the moving van last.
Remember to allow yourself enough time to pack properly. Start packing weeks in advance if possible. A rushed job can cause things to break, be misplaced or forgotten. Think organization now and you'll thank yourself during the unpacking stage.
